Position Title: NPS Historic Preservation Training Center – Traditional Trades Advancement Program – Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial – AmeriCorps

Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements (STE) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

STE in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Apprenticeship Program. Members will receive introductory training in a variety of traditional trades and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources. This program provides participants with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.

This internship position will be based at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in Lincoln City, Indiana. Encompassing the land where Abraham Lincoln lived with his family from 1816 to 1830, the memorial commemorates Lincoln’s early life and the values that shaped him. The memorial includes a visitor center, a museum, a replica of the Lincoln family’s log cabin, as well as a living historical farm and various trails for exploration.

Description of Duties:

• Rebuild historic gates and fences in and around the Living Historical Farm.
• Working under the guidance of maintenance permanent staff, repair approximately 1000 square feet of broken mortar joints and flagstones in the plaza walkway.
• Tuck point repairs on the historic stone walls that encircle the visitor center (VC) parking lot and on the VC Plaza walkway.
• Contribute to repairs of approximately 700 linear feet of free-standing stone walls with missing or deteriorated mortar joints and broken or missing stones.
• Plant trees to replace dead and downed trees along the cultural landscape.
• Maintain hiking trails and bridges, rebuild water bars to reduce erosion, and repair storm water runoff damage.

Qualifications:

• Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214.
• United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
• Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
• Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
• Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for this position, including, lifting, or handling of objects over 50lbs using proper techniques.
• Standing or kneeling for long periods and will be required to climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces such as a roof, and/or be able to work in confined spaces.

Time Requirements:

• Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday to Friday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
• Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:

• Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
• Carpentry and Masonry training
• Historic and Cultural Landscape Maintenance training
• Field experience gained from working at multiple National Monuments

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
